Lighthouse Museum Operation & Maintenance
First lit in 1836 the Pottawatomie Lighthouse, also known as the Rock Island Light, is the oldest lighthouse in Wisconsin and it’s rich history has drawn thousands of visitors each year to tour the historic landmark. In conjunction with the Wi DNR the Friends of Rock Island have aided in the preservation, restoration, and maintenance need to keep it open to the public each summer.
Through grants and countless volunteer hours FORI has assisted in significant structural restoration including: the removal of lead paint, replacement of summer kitchen flooring, gutters, and shutters, in addition to installing a Fresnel Lens Replica in the lighthouse’s tower. As a result of these projects since 2004 FORI has had the honor of allowing the public to experience the historic life of a lighthouse keeper through the Pottawatomie Lighthouse Docent program which provides tours to the public Memorial Day Weekend through Columbus Day. Tours occur seven days a week 10 AM - 4 PM and include the opportunity to view Lake Michigan from the lantern room - donations are not required but help to ensure the continued preservation and access to Rock Island’s historic lighthouse.
