Thodarson Boathouse Restoration
The iconic Thordarson Boathouse completed in 1929 is the first glimpse visitors to Rock Island see as they make the journey across from Washington Island. Commissioned by Chester Thordarson it originally served as an outpost of art, history, literature, and high society on the island he purchased in 1910. Today it serves as a gathering place for those visiting Rock Island to delve into the history of both Thordarson and the island’s journey to become one of Wisconsin’s premier State Parks.
Since FORI’s inception in 1994 the organization has served as stewards of Thordarson’s history with Rock Island and the preservation of the architectural legacy he left behind for future generations. FORI has managed and facilitated the preservation of the structure in addition to the historical artifacts inside that provide a glimpse into it’s rich history. The creation of the Thordarson Memorabilia Room, purchasing of UV protection in order to preserve hand carved furnishings, refinishing of decking & flooring, and historic photo displays are among the many projects undertaken by FORI to ensure the boathouse continues to remain an outpost for art, history, and literature for generations to come.
